Flying the flag for Women’s World Cup

An all-female team at Northern Flags is responsible for designing, printing and hemming a 3m flag and hoisting it up a 26ft pole outside the company’s offices in Leeds in support of the Lionesses in their Women’s World Cup quarter-final football game against Norway today. The flag will fly for the duration of the World Cup outside the company’s offices.
Northern Flags general manager, Claire Taylforth, said of the project: “Northern Flags is proud that 70% of its workforce are women, which is highly unusual in the print and manufacturing industry. After watching the women’s team fly through to the quarter final, the girls wanted to show their support and use their extensive design and print knowledge. I was delighted when I saw them clubbing together to design, print, hem - and hoist it up!” Taylforth further explained: “It was a team effort - Sarah and Ella from marketing and design worked collaboratively to design the flag, Paisley and Ruth, our digital print operators, put it through production, and Jo, our seamstress, hemmed the flag. Sarah and Ella then hoisted the flag up!” The team wanted to keep it topical. Using ‘#Lionesses’ as their inspiration, a lioness’s head was placed behind the England Cross, alongside the tag line ‘Lionesses. Pride of Britain.’ The colour of the Lioness’s head was colour matched to the England team’s away kit. This isn’t the first time the company has flown the flag for an England Team - for the Men’s World Cup last year, a waistcoat-inspired flag was made in homage to the waistcoat worn by England Manager Gary Southgate.
