HP advances sustainability in print

HP has issued a progress report on its initiatives to reduce the impact the global graphic arts market has on the environment.

The company, which recently became the first-ever platinum sponsor of the industry-wide Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, has listed a number of moves to advance sustainability including a white paper outlining the significant carbon-emissions reduction opportunities possible by combining digital print with progressive media sourcing strategies.?

For signage and graphics printing, HP highlights its latex inks as a key environmental development along with the ongoing growth of its recycled and recyclable media. HP has also updated its Carbon Footprint Calculator to support HP Designjet large-format printers.?

HP is also supporting third-party research developments that substantiate and broaden the industry's technical understanding and implementation of de-inking of digital printing, a key step in the paper recycling process. HP is working with the Centre Technique du Papier (CTP) in France, Paper Technology Specialist in Germany, and Western Michigan University in the US as well as being a member of the Digital Print Deinking Alliance, an organisation founded in 2008 to assess the de-inkability of inkjet-printed papers.
