Tax can be taxing

The latest BAPC newsletter highlights a problem that’s worth passing on. The government has issued an update to its guidance on how to recognise genuine HMRC contact following telephone scams. Those scams highlighted by the HMRC are as follows:

- Taxpayers receive telephone calls claiming to be from HMRC requesting and personal information in order to receive a tax refund, or demanding money for an unpaid tax bill.

- A recorded message is left, allegedly from HMRC, advising that HMRC is bringing a lawsuit against the individual and is going to sue them. The recipient is asked to telephone 0161 850 8494 and press ‘1’ to speak to the officer dealing with the matter.

HMRC is advising people not to respond, but report the matter to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
