Select Digital Print works on Landscape as Archive

Select Digital Print group has completed a major project for St. Mullins Heritage Centre in Co Carlow which opened a national permanent exhibition on the 27 May to showcase the rich and unique remains of this small townland.

Designed and built by the fourth year students of architecture at University College Dublin (UCD) in conjunction with the Heritage centre, the exhibition focuses on the visible remains and the student’s collection of artefacts and memorabilia of this small townland which provide an insight into some of the defining periods and great events of Irish history. Housed in one of the remaining roofed chapels in the townland of St Mullins the exhibition was as a result of a detailed measured survey by the students in September 2009 of the six chapels, graveyard and surrounding monuments in the area, all of which are a national monument under the auspices of the Office of Public Works (OPW). Select Digital Print was asked by UCD to initially provide advice on how best to present graphically the storyline involved and then to produce and install the graphics required.

Philip Black, financial director of the company, explained some of the background involved. “Firstly Select Digital was asked to provide advice on what type of suitable material to use for the exhibition graphics both indoor and outdoor, based on the construction plan. After that was agreed we produced over one hundred different display boards on the companies Mimaki JV33 160 solvent printer, matt laminated and mounted on 5mm Foamex boards. All of the prints were 335mm wide but ranging in different heights depending on the size of the various stands which were constructed out of timber patons to produce an interlinked grid like frame.”

The exhibition is structured around ten separate story lines of the townland supported by documented oral history with corresponding imagery of each story.

Sorcha Kenneally, fourth Year Student of Architecture at UCD added: “I was given the job to research materials that could survive in a damp space.  After some exploring I found out that Foamex would be the best option. I tried contacting several firms in and around the Dublin area and Select Digital became the obvious choice because of its genuine interest in the project, good advice on what material to use, supply of samples, and the portfolio of work that we could see from the website.  When it came time to print, and we ended up having quite a substantial amount more than we initially thought, this had no impact on Select Digital’s ability to get the job done on time and to a standard far beyond what we ever expected.”
