Students of Harlow Green Primary School getting hands on at Astley
Students of Harlow Green Primary School, who were treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Gateshead sign maker Astley as part of a competition prize.
The visit followed the school’s second collaborative design competition, which challenged pupils to create graphics for nine themed play zones, including the Reading Gazebo, Construction Zone and Traditional Sports area. Winning entries, selected by Astley’s Board, will now be professionally manufactured and installed around the school.
During the visit, students explored Astley’s production facility, took part in interactive activities and learned about careers within the sign industry.
Astley managing director, James Mavi said: “It was another incredibly difficult decision for the Board, as we received so many fantastic entries from talented students across all year groups. The creativity, effort and quality on display made selecting the winners no easy task.
“Our team thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the designs and welcoming the students to our facility, giving them an insight into what we do and the range of careers available within our industry. We are now looking forward to bringing the winning ideas to life by manufacturing the signs and installing them at the school for everyone to enjoy.”
Assistant head, Leighanne Softley, said: “We are delighted that the competition winners had such a fantastic visit to Astley – the children have not stopped talking about it since. They thoroughly enjoyed the activities, particularly the ‘Spot the Things’ challenge and coaster-making, which they were excited to share with their classmates back at school.”
