Graphics extravaganza at Museum of Lancashire

Preston-based large-format graphic specialist PPS has produced and installed various graphic displays at the recently refurbished Museum of Lancashire.

The Museum of Lancashire at Preston's Quarter Sessions House has reopened following a £1.7m refurbishment and will be offering free admission for the next 12 months. A number of exciting new interactive galleries have been added to the attraction, including Lancashire Goes to War, Lancashire at Play, Time Line and Archaeological displays.

Working through Conlon Construction, the main contractor and liaising directly with Lancashire County Museum Services, PPS proposed new materials and processes for several of the upcoming exhibits. These included digital textured wallpapers, 15 mm thick Multiply printable birch wood, canvas, acrylics and foamex for the following displays

Over 100m2 wallpaper were printed and installed for the curved Lancashire Time Line wall, Archeologically dig and alcoves in the Play and Work galleries. Over 75m2 of 15mm Multiply was printed direct for panels in the War, Work and Law and Order galleries. And more than 60 linear metres of printed foamex was installed around the top of the WW1 trench to form a panoramic war scene, helping to recreate the horrors of that period. Specialist printed acrylics, canvas map displays and an interactive magnetic display were also undertaken by PPS for other sections.

Production and installation took place in November with finalised designs and artwork being fed into PPS’s print department on a daily basis. Installation of wallpapers had to revolve around cabinet building, display arrangements and the final rush of building snagging that goes with these sorts of building projects.

Being located on the Museum’s doorstep meant PPS could react quickly to changing situations and all members of the production team took pride in the knowledge, knowing they were involved in a project that would be on public view for years to come.
