Print waste recyclers target Scotland

J&G Environmental is boosting its presence in Scotland. The print waste company, which has its headquarters at Blandford, Dorset, is leasing a 372m2 premises on the Springkerse Industrial Estate in Stirling where it will set up a waste transfer station serving printers across the whole of Scotland.

J&G currently collects, treats and recycles waste from thousands of UK printers and newspaper publishers but has had a comparatively low profile in Scotland. Estimates show that some 420 printers are currently operating in the country. “We now feel it’s the right time to expand our work in Scotland and are in the process of putting the infrastructure and staff in place to do that. We expect to be fully operational there by the end of January,” said general manager John Haines.

The Stirling transfer facility will mean wastes from individual print companies will be segregated, repacked, reused or recycled locally wherever possible. This will minimise the transport of materials to a waste treatment and recycling centre where valuable raw materials can be recovered.

“This is a much more environmentally sustainable way of handling the waste because it reduces long distance haulage and therefore reduces our carbon footprint,” said Haines. “Hopefully we can cut the impact even more by installing material recovery facilities at the Stirling base in the future.”
