SCA and Sundsvall inaugurate district heating project

SCA has invested SEK 380m and Sundsvall Energi SEK 100m in the BioCoop energy project, thereby quadrupling deliveries of energy from SCA’s mills to the Sundsvall district heating grid and reducing oil consumption by 25,000m3 per year.

The project involved the redesign and conversion of two boilers at Ortviken paper mill, enabling them to be fuelled with wood pellets, and connecting Östrand pulp mill to the Sundsvall district heating grid. This has enabled a quadrupling of energy deliveries from SCA and, with only limited investment, it has been possible for Sundsvall Energi to secure the supply of energy, reduce costs and cut emissions.

“It’s a win-win situation for all parties involved,” said Jörgen Berglund, chairman of the Sundsvall Municipal Executive Board at the inauguration ceremony. “In particular, it is a great boost for the environment given that we will radically reduce oil consumption and emissions of fossil carbon dioxide.”

“Forest industries such as Östrand and Ortviken produce and use large quantities of energy,” said Ulf Larsson, president of SCA Forest Products. This provides us with good opportunities to identify efficient solutions and partnerships.”
