Service Graphics is responsible for providing the giant backdrop for the Coldplay Mylo Xyloto European Tour. Set design and construction company Hangman commissioned the St Ives subsidiary to print the 6,200m2 backdrop which covers the stadium seating behind the stage.
The brief was for a lightweight, waterproof and flame retardant backdrop which could be folded away for easy transportation between locations. Service Graphics produced a quantity of different sized sections - the largest of which are 20 x 20m - to allow it to fit different sized venues. The print, which took over ten days, was produced on acrylic coated Visiontex material on Service Graphics’ NUR Expedio machine housed at its Skelmersdale supersite.
Production challenges included colour consistency and the requirement for the backdrop sections to match up even when used in differing configurations. Service Graphics had to work closely with Hangman as the final product needed to look its best and be as easy to install as possible for the tour crew at each venue.
